A Selection of Questions

Things I’ve wondered lately…

Why don’t police officers ever use their turn signals?

Why do they call blinds, curtains, and shades “window treatments”? It makes it sound like the windows are going to the doctor.

Why do people feel so compelled to talk, text, or play with a cell phone when they find themselves alone?

This one directed at the large contingency of Miami drivers who cut me off or drive erratically just to pass me: Why do you think your destination is so much more important than mine?

Why are nearly all the actors in commercials for cleaning products women?

How is it that, in a city full of people constantly in a hurry, everyone is late all the time?

When will all of those empty luxury condos in Downtown Miami have more than 40% occupancy?

Why does it seem that the majority population of super-wealthy areas in Miami appears to be lawn maintenance crews?

I have a far more substantial post forthcoming about some Independence Day-inspired thoughts, but I thought I would throw that out there for now.

5 Responses to A Selection of Questions

  1. People are in a hurry because they are late.

  2. The actors in most commercials for cleaning products are women because, though the companies would probably never say this outright, women are their desired consumers. How many times have you heard a NASCAR Dad say “I’ve got to get that new Swiffer [or however it's spelled] product?”

  3. One word- it ties in with the late, the roadway discourtesy and the fact that you mostly see women in cleaning product adds: “Machismo”.
Its unmanly to be punctual, to be polite (especially on the road), and to be associated with Mr. Clean- who is too metrosexual for the brutish gender.

  4. There are two responses that can answer most of those questions, in my opinion:

    1. Because life is not fair.

    2. Because that’s just the way it is, even though it sucks.
    :)

  5. the texting along thing is something i think about a lot.

i had a 2 classes this summer, and on wednesdays, i had a good hour or so in between them. whenever i would just sit on a bench or take a nap, i felt super awkward for not doing anything, so i’d take out my phone just to check for the 40th time that no one had called.

it feels like since everyone on the other benches were doing something, wasn’t there something wrong with me for just staring off into space? it is kind of weird that we’re never really “alone” anymore.
